Newsmax Rising Bestsellers – Week of Jan. 8, 2024

[ad_1]

Secrets. So many secrets this week in the Newsmax Rising Bestsellers. One book may reveal the secret to super-longevity — achieving a three-digit lifespan. A second explains the secrets that the federal health agencies withhold from the public to maintain control. A third goes over the secret to success of a wildly popular California chain of eateries, and the fourth nonfiction pick will discuss what may be the ultimate secret of them all — unidentified flying objects (UFOs). But there’s also the latest Tom Clancy thriller.

Tom Clancy Command and Control (A Jack Ryan Novel),” by Marc Cameron (G.P. Putnam’s Sons)

Tom Clancy was the undisputed master of the techno-military-espionage thriller, a genre he developed, and his death 10 years ago left a huge void in the publishing world. Enter Marc Cameron, one of several authors who picked up the ball and ran with it, and “Command and Control” is his latest effort. In this one, Jack Ryan, who is now the U.S. president, agrees to help the Panamanian president in his fight against his socialist rival. In the midst of it all, the government in Panama is overthrown in a coup d’état, placing access through the Panama Canal Zone into jeopardy. “Tom Clancy may be gone, but the characters continue on,” wrote Randy G. Mills, reviewing for Amazon. “There have been a few writers continuing the story, and they have all been excellent. I’ve read every Tom Clancy book I could get my hands on, and they do not disappoint.” [Fiction]

The Big 100: The New World of Super-Aging,” by William J. Kole (Diversion Books)

The steady rise in U.S. life expectancy has once again started to recover after a sharp pandemic decline, and we’re already seeing the effects. Last year former first lady Roslyn Carter died at 96 and was survived by her 99-year-old husband. Legendary game show host Bob Barker died at 99, as did actress Betty White. On Dec. 7 century-old Pearl Harbor survivors attended ceremonies marking the attack in Hawaii. “Hooked from the start with a lively intro to France’s Jeanne Calment, who lived to 122 and had her own rap album! Explores the science of aging, and possible, if not probable, futures for the ever-growing number of super-agers” wrote Margaret Hetheman, reviewing for GoodReads. “Highly recommend this upbeat read with an eye toward making our longer lives more healthy and meaningful.” [Nonfiction]

Deception: The Great Covid Cover-Up,” by Rand Paul (Regnery)

Everyone recalls the battle of words between Dr. Anthony Fauci and Sen. Rand Paul, also a physician, over COVID’s origins and treatments, along with Fauci’s suspected culpability. Adding fuel to the debate, a recently-released CDC report acknowledges that people who receive certain vaccinations may not do as well as they would like to believe. And each time federal public health agencies declare a medical “emergency,” it comes at a huge cost — both in national treasure and especially in personal freedom. “This is a power even greater than that enjoyed by Adolf Hitler as he rose to become the absolute dictator of Nazi Germany in 1933. If we accept this, we fail to remember the lessons of history,” wrote Phil Duffy, in his review of the book for the Mises Institute. “That, I believe, is Sen. Rand Paul’s contribution to liberty. He won’t allow us to forget.” [Nonfiction]

The Ins-N-Outs of In-N-Out Burger: The Inside Story of California’s First Drive-Through and How it Became a Beloved Cultural Icon,” by Lynsi Snyder (Thomas Nelson)

In-N-Out Burger has been a jealously held California secret since its start in 1948. It’s the first fast-food establishment to offer drive-through service — before Burger King, Wendy’s, or even McDonald’s. Add to that their products leave the competition in the dust by keeping the menu simple but perfect — burgers, fries, soft drinks and shakes. That’s it. The book was heralded as a bestseller by both USA Today and The Wall Street Journal and was written by someone who knows all the company secrets — In-N-Out Burger’s president. “This book has it all! Scriptures starting off each chapter, information on ALL things in and out, how they make their buns, slice their tomatoes and even what type of beef they use for their burgers. And let us not forget, the Bible verses they put on the bottom of all of their products,” penned Laura Robinson for GoodReads. “What I don’t recommend is reading this book if you live far from an In and Out Burger. Because I’ve never wanted one so much in my life.” She may get her wish. The company is slowly serving its goodness to customers outside of California, including Texas, Nevada, Oregon, and New Mexico. [Nonfiction]

UFO: The Inside Story of the US Government’s Search for Alien Life Here―and Out There,” by Garrett M. Graff (Avid Reader Press / Simon & Schuster)

In all the planets, within all the solar systems, within all the galaxies that comprise the universe, can Earth be the sole location where intelligent life can be found? New York Times bestselling author Garrett Graff (“Raven Rock” and “The Only Plane in the Sky”) attempts to answer that question. The U.S. government has been on the case since two separate sightings were reported in 1947. The book comes at an especially auspicious time, given that an apparent UFO was spotted near Air Force One at Los Angeles International Airport during a presidential visit just a few days prior to Christmas. “This is a very balanced book on UFOs,” said Dale Reeck for Amazon. “It doesn’t debunk, nor it a ‘true-believer’ effort. A very enjoyable read of some of the top cases in UFO history.” [Nonfiction]
