Newsmax Rising Bestsellers – Week of Oct. 2, 2023

[ad_1]

Several selections in this week’s Newsmax Rising Bestsellers examine the seemingly ever-encroaching Marxist, un-American forces taking over our society’s institutions and how to combat it. In one a former Defense Department chief of staff likens the federal government to an organized criminal enterprise, and, in another, a popular political commentator argues that the educational system is being used to infect society’s last free institution — the nuclear family. A third implores America’s religious institutions to speak out in the face of political evil in spite of the so-called “separation of church and state” doctrine. There is also in-depth look at one of the biggest con jobs in high school sports. For fiction, this week’s novel of the week is a masterpiece of suspense depicting crime and prejudice in mid-twentieth century middle America.

The River We Remember: A Novel,” by William Kent Krueger (Atria Books)

The mystery begins in a small, southwest Minnesota town in 1958 when the body of a powerful and respected community leader is found floating in the river — dead from a shotgun blast. The discovery is made during a ceremony honoring the town’s war veterans. Reviving old prejudices, responsibility immediately falls on a Native American WWII veteran with a Japanese wife. It’s up to the local sheriff, another war veteran, to discern the truth. “‘The River We Remember’ is an excellent book, like every other William Kent Krueger book that I’ve had the pleasure to read,” said B. Schaaf, reviewing for Amazon. “I especially liked the epilogue that made it clear that this is a one-off, stand-alone book that requires no sequels by tying up loose ends that would have otherwise left me wondering. Krueger fans and those new to him that enjoy mysteries will all find this book enjoyable.” [Fiction]

Friday Night Lies: The Bishop Sycamore Story,” by Andrew King & Ben Ferree (Triumph Books)

This depicts the story of the Bishop Sycamore (BS) Academy scandal, a sham Ohio-based school run by a con man and am athletic program that was supposed to be the next big thing in high school football. It all came crashing down in August 2021 when national powerhouse IMG Academy trounced BS 56-0 in front of a nationwide audience on ESPN. “The reporting of King and Ferree point out many of the loopholes in place that were exploited by Roy Johnson which allowed him to repeatedly take advantage of the people around him and the continue to walk away without facing consequences,” wrote Julie, reviewing for Amazon. “I highly recommend this book!” [Nonfiction]

Government Gangsters: The Deep State, the Truth, and the Battle for Our Democracy,” by Kash Pramod Patel (Post Hill Press)

“Government Gangsters” is “A brilliant roadmap highlighting every corrupt actor, to ultimately return our agencies and departments to work for the American People,” wrote former President Donald J. Trump, adding “we will use this blueprint to help us take back the White House and remove these Gangsters from all of Government!” Patel was the chief of staff to the Department of Defense after serving as deputy assistant to the president and senior director for counterterrorism on the National Security Council in the Trump administration. “I listened to several interviews of Kash explaining and reading from a few pages of this book. Names of actual people from all parties whom he includes in the list of perps! This is a nonpartisan book. More Republican politicians than Democrats are listed!” said Okke Surjana reviewing for GoodReads. “I have per-ordered several to share with others as well.” [Nonfiction]

Hide Your Children: Exposing the Marxists Behind the Attack on America’s Kids,” by Liz Wheeler (Regnery Publishing)

During the COVID-19 outbreak, parents realized from listening to their kids’ “Zoom schools” that there was an effort to target their young, malleable minds with non-academic nonsense such as gender fluidity and critical race theory, Liz Wheeler explains. “The arrack on our children is not new. The left has been trying to reengineer our society for nearly a century and, unfortunately, they’ve been very successful at it. They’ve captured four out of five of our major foundational cultural institutions,” Wheeler said in a recent interview. They include the media, education, many religious institutions, and the legal system. The only one remaining is the nuclear family. [Nonfiction]

Letter to the American Church,” by Eric Metaxas (Salem Books)

Author Eric Metaxas recently appeared on Newsmax TV’s “Eric Bolling The Balance” and told the eponymous host that it’s important that Catholic churches stand up and speak out in the wake of the FBI’s assault on the religion’s traditional adherents. “If you’re going to a church that’s ignoring this kind of thing, you’re guilty. This is as bad as it’s ever been in the United States,” he said, and likened the church’s silence in the face of political evil today to the church’s silence in 1930s Germany. The book has earned rave reviews. “Sobering and eye-opening,” wrote Dennis Preston for Amazon. “In this book, he attacks the very idea of separation of church and states that the church unfortunately has bought into in many quarters, as John the Baptist did. God is not just the God of the church, He is Lord of the whole earth and universe. This is a wake-up call to remember our role in the world as believers. Well worth the time to read.” [Nonfiction]
