Rep. Bacon: Johnson Could Lose Speakership Over Ukraine

Rep. Don Bacon, R-Neb., suggested to NBC News on Sunday that Speaker Mike Johnson’s leadership of the House may come to an end over Ukraine aid.

When asked on “Meet the Press” if the Louisiana Republican could lose his speakership over bringing a Ukraine aid bill to the floor, Bacon responded: “It’s possible. I’m not going to deny it.

“We have one or two people that are not team players. They’d rather enjoy the limelight, the social media. It’s a very narrow majority. And one or two people can make us a minority.”

The Nebraska congressman added that there could be a “standoff” with Johnson in the lower chamber over Ukraine aid and noted that he hopes the “speaker prevails.”

Amid the House vote on March 22 to pass a $1.2 trillion spending bill — right before the Easter break — Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., filed a motion to vacate. The motion is seen as a window that could lead to Johnson’s ouster.

Commenting on the matter shortly after she filed the motion, Greene stated that Johnson “should not bring funding for Ukraine” to the floor.

Bacon did not mention Greene specifically in his comments to NBC.
