A travel blogger has been slammed for sharing a “tone-deaf” post urging her almost half a million followers to “just book a flight.”
Kat Crittenden, of California, has clocked more than 19 million likes on her TikToks that flaunt her travel adventures around the world.
However, her latest clip has somewhat backfired after many accused her of missing the mark.
“Me again, convincing you to travel lol,” the influencer captioned the clip that showed her on a picturesque island in Thailand.
“Like this could be 5:30 p.m. on a Thursday night for you if you just book a freaking flight.
“Like come to Thailand, this should freaking sell you — get your ass out here.”
The clip — which has been viewed more than 4 million times — didn’t go down as she had hoped.
“Bro … we had to stop buying eggs cause they were $6 but no, yeah here I come,” one person responded.
“I’m literally in crippling debt [right now],” another person revealed.
“I’ll put living paycheck to paycheck on hold so I can do that,” a woman shared. “Thanks for the advice.”
“I’m a full-time student and working and still struggling to pay rent but okay a $1k+ plane ticket sounds reasonable,” another added.
It comes as her Australian followers face a cost of living crisis, with three-quarters of Aussies currently cutting back on non-essential spending, while over two-thirds are now more concerned about being able to pay their bills than they were 12 months ago, according to Cashrewards research.
But, despite the pressure, Australians are still prioritizing travel, with 63 percent of survey respondents reporting they have no intention of postponing their travel plans, Booking.com data revealed.
It also showed more than half (53 percent) are even planning to increase both the trips they take and their travel budgets.
However, Kat’s followers continued to lash out, claiming she was able to travel due to help from her parents.
“If I lived with my parents and didn’t have bills to pay, I would definitely go on out-of-country trips every other month,” said another.
It prompted her to share another video, hitting back at claims she has “rich parents.”
“Is that why my only vacation growing up was going to Wisconsin in the summer to visit my family,” she said.
“Like I didn’t even [leave] the country and I didn’t barely even leave my own state until I started traveling when I was 18.”
In the caption she added: “I am endlessly grateful that I had the ability to go see my family and this video is not complaining about that AT ALL, it’s emphasizing that I travel with my money and I worked for this and saved for this for years myself.”
But it still sparked backlash, with one person commenting: “Whether you have rich parents or not, traveling is a luxury and most can’t just get up and go wherever they want.”
